Key insightW wind = highest humidity (93.6%) but worst buck efficiency (1.5/day). High humidity alone doesn’t bring deer out — wind direction matters more. But peak hours are 6am and 6pm — the two calmest, low-wind periods of the day. This may not be coincidence. In low wind and high humidity, scent molecules attach to water droplets and disperse widely, giving deer confidence to move earlier and more freely. In high wind and low humidity, scent dispersal is unpredictable — deer move cautiously or stay bedded.

Humidity is consistently high across all winds. Wind direction is the decisive variable — it determines stand selection and buck activity rate.

The scent-science hypothesis — next season’s research

Peak deer activity at 6am and 6pm — both naturally low-wind, calm periods. Science suggests low wind + high humidity lets scent molecules ride water droplets and disperse widely, giving deer the confidence to move freely and arrive earlier. High wind + low humidity disrupts scent, making deer cautious and late. Our data supports this hypothesis. We’ll test it with wind speed data next season.
