Our Story
About DeerMapper
DeerMapper was built by hunters and data scientists who believed trail cam photos were telling a story nobody was reading. Our patented AI unlocks that story — giving every hunter the same intelligence advantage once reserved for the pros.
Protected by U.S. Patent No. 9,706,756 and U.S. Patent No. 12,382,950

Meet Mike
The hunter behind DeerMapper
Mike is a lifelong hunter, a grandpa, and the founder of DeerMapper. He grew up chasing whitetail on family land in Wisconsin, where he shot his first buck in 1963. By day he built a career in software and data; by season he was in a tree stand with his family.
After one too many weekends outsmarted by the same herd, Mike started applying the tools of his profession — data, pattern recognition, and eventually AI — to the trail cam photos piling up on his desk. What began as a personal project to hunt his own land smarter became a patented platform now trusted by hunters across the country.
This is his story, in his words.
The Birth of an Idea
Like many of you, my family is blessed with generations of hunters. My brothers and I have had long discussions about how to keep this tradition alive in our modern culture — how to engage the next generation, help them achieve the results they seek, and do it all while embracing technology. Our answer is DeerMapper.
In 2010, I was in my deer stand by the south field of our hunting property. Halfway through my hunt, my wife called — laughing — to tell me the deer were in the west field. “I’ll get them tomorrow,” I thought. The next evening, settled into my west field stand, she called again: the deer were back in the south field. That was Sunday. My weekend hunt was over.
After hunting this land for 40 years, how could the deer still elude me so completely? Had they been doing this all along? The problem was clear: with our property three hours away, there simply wasn’t enough time to properly scout the herd. I had trail camera evidence of deer in both locations, but no reliable way to predict where they would be next.
After that frustrating weekend, I searched extensively for a tool that could help. Despite all of the technology available today, nothing on the market offered a real solution. I knew it was time to build one.
Passion Becoming Reality
In 2015 — after five years of research, testing, and refinement — the vision came to life. My son, my son-in-law, and I each harvested a mature buck, and none of us spent more than a half hour in the woods. We had scouted the herd online in the weeks prior, and the deer arrived almost exactly at the predicted time.
Watching our technology perform the way we had hoped was an extraordinary moment. My son discovered a new enthusiasm for hunting that day — not just the tradition, but the strategy and science behind it. We had gone beyond instinct and used data to genuinely understand the deer’s patterns.
This merging of the traditional and the modern proved to be far more satisfying than sitting in a tree for days with no results. No more showing up to the south field when the deer were in the west field.
Our Technology
DeerMapper is built on years of research and development by a team of hunters, mathematicians, and data scientists. Our core innovation — extracting 50+ data points from every trail camera photo using patented AI — transforms raw images into a living, growing intelligence about the deer on your specific property.
Unlike other hunting apps that predict general deer activity across a region, DeerMapper predicts when, where, and from which direction deer will arrive at your stand, based on the actual historical movement data from your land. Every photo you upload makes the predictions more accurate.
Our Mission
DeerMapper exists to give every hunter — regardless of how much time they can spend scouting — access to the same level of intelligence that top land managers have always had. We believe hunting is more rewarding when you understand the story your land is telling. We built DeerMapper to help you read it.
